Three different media types share one link format

A post on X can carry a native video, an animated GIF, or a still image, and the URL looks the same for all three. What matters is that X's "GIFs" are not GIFs at all — they are silent, looping MP4s. The platform converts every uploaded GIF to video on ingest because the format is vastly more efficient. So a request for "the GIF" returns an MP4, and that is the actual stored file, not a substitution.

Adaptive bitrate means several renditions exist

Native video on X is published as an adaptive stream: the same clip encoded at several resolutions, with the player switching based on your connection. A typical post has three or four renditions from roughly 320p up to 720p or 1080p. Because the player picks for you, what you watched is not necessarily the best available. Downloading exposes the full ladder, and taking the top rung is usually worth the extra megabytes.

Quoted and reposted content resolves to the original

If a post quotes another post containing video, the media belongs to the original author, and that is what resolves. This matters when the original gets deleted: the quote survives as text while the video becomes unreachable, because the underlying media object is gone even though a post referencing it still renders.

Threads can hold several videos

A long thread may attach media to multiple posts. Each is its own object with its own link — there is no single address that returns "all the videos in this thread". Pulling them means resolving each post individually, which is tedious but is genuinely how the data is structured rather than a shortcoming to route around.

Protected accounts and deleted posts

Posts from protected accounts require an approved follower session and are not publicly resolvable. Deleted posts stop serving media immediately, and a link that worked last week failing today almost always means deletion rather than a technical fault. Age alone is not a barrier — a five-year-old public video generally still resolves fine.

Subtitles and alt text do not come with the file

Captions on X are typically burned into the video by the uploader rather than delivered as a separate track, so whatever is visible on screen is in the file. Alt text, by contrast, is metadata attached to the post and is not part of the media. If the description mattered to you, copy it separately — it will not survive the download.

Journalism, archiving, and the obvious caveat

Saving public video from X for reference, reporting, or archiving is a legitimate and common need, particularly because posts vanish frequently. That does not make the content yours. Credit the account, and be careful with footage of identifiable people who did not choose to be filmed.
