9GAG is primarily a re-posting community. Very little of what appears there originated there: content arrives from Reddit, X, TikTok, Instagram and elsewhere, often stripped of its original credit along the way. The media resolves perfectly well from 9GAG's own infrastructure, but the post you are looking at is frequently several hops from whoever actually made the thing.

GIFs that are really videos

Like most modern platforms, 9GAG converts uploaded GIFs to MP4 for efficiency while continuing to present them as GIFs in the interface. Requesting "the GIF" returns a short, silent, looping video, and that is genuinely the stored file rather than a substitution.

Three content types, one layout

Posts are images, videos, or multi-part sets, and the feed presents them almost identically. Image posts are typically JPEG or PNG at modest dimensions, since the format is built around quick scrolling rather than detail.

Compression from repeated re-posting

Because the same image or clip circulates through multiple platforms before arriving, 9GAG media is often several generations removed from its source. The visible artefacts — blocky gradients, ringing around text, muddy dark areas — were baked in long before 9GAG received the file, and nothing downstream can recover the original.

Sections and sensitive content

9GAG separates content into sections, some of which are age-gated and require a logged-in session. Those are not publicly resolvable.

Credit is the thing most often missing

The recurring complaint about aggregators is that creators lose attribution as their work travels. If you save something from 9GAG and intend to share it further, a reverse image search will usually surface the original poster in seconds — and passing that credit along costs nothing.
