X does not actually store GIFs. Every GIF uploaded to the platform is converted to a silent, looping MP4 on ingest, because the video format is dramatically more efficient than the decades-old GIF spec. Paste a post containing a GIF and ReelsDownloader returns that MP4 — which is the genuine stored file, not a substitution for something else.
About downloading from Twitter / X GIFs
X has not stored a GIF since 2014
When you upload a GIF to X the platform transcodes it to MP4 immediately and discards the original. Everything the interface labels a GIF is a silent, looping, autoplaying video. This is not a compromise made at download time — it is genuinely the only file that exists, and it has been that way for over a decade because the efficiency difference is enormous.
Why the change was worth making
The GIF format dates from 1987 and is capped at 256 colours per frame with no inter-frame compression worth the name. A five-second animation that occupies fifteen megabytes as a GIF fits in under one as an MP4, with better colour and smoother motion. On a platform serving billions of autoplaying loops the saving is not marginal, which is why every major platform made the same move.
Converting back costs you
You can turn the MP4 into a real .gif with any converter, and occasionally you need to — some forums, email clients and chat systems still accept only GIF. But the result will be larger and visibly worse, because you are re-encoding into a format with a 256-colour ceiling. Convert only when something downstream genuinely demands it.
No audio, ever
These files are encoded without an audio stream by definition. A silent download is the expected and correct result, not a failure to fetch the sound.
GIF search results are third-party
X's built-in GIF picker pulls from partner libraries such as Giphy and Tenor. A GIF posted through the picker is hosted and attributed accordingly, which is worth knowing when you are trying to find where an animation originated.
Reaction GIFs still come from somewhere
A great many are clipped from films, television, and other people's videos. They circulate freely and nobody much minds, but that is a social convention rather than a licence — which becomes relevant the moment one ends up in commercial material.
