Threads was built on top of Instagram's existing stack, and media inherits its behaviour wholesale: the same content-delivery network, the same storage, and crucially the same signed URLs carrying a cryptographic signature and a short expiry timestamp. A media address copied from a Threads post stops resolving within hours — not because the post was deleted, but because the temporary token minted for that request aged out. Resolving the post itself mints a fresh one.
Chains are many objects, not one
The format is designed for continuation, so a single train of thought may run across a dozen posts, each carrying up to twenty images or its own video. There is no combined endpoint for a thread. Pulling media from a long chain means resolving each post in turn, which is how the data is genuinely structured rather than a limitation to route around.
The cross-post quality gap
Creators routinely publish the same clip to Instagram Reels and Threads. Each platform re-encodes its own upload independently, and Threads compresses harder — it caps video at five minutes and optimises for fast feed loading. Where both copies exist, the Instagram one is usually the better file. Checking is worth thirty seconds if the clip matters.
Quotes point at the original author's media
A quoted post's media belongs to whoever published it. If they delete it, the quote survives as a stub while its media becomes unreachable — a frequent cause of half-broken archived conversations.
Privacy is inherited from Instagram
Because identity is shared between the two products, a private Instagram account generally means a private Threads profile. There is no separate Threads-only visibility setting that changes what is publicly served.
Federation makes deletion imperfect
