Reddit stores video and audio as separate files

This is the single most important technical fact about downloading from Reddit, and it explains almost every complaint about silent downloads. Reddit's native player, v.redd.it, uses DASH streaming: the video track and the audio track are stored as entirely separate files and combined by the player at playback time. A naive download grabs only the video file and produces a perfectly good, completely silent clip. Getting sound requires fetching the audio track as well and muxing the two together.

Not every Reddit video has an audio track at all

Confusingly, some genuinely do not. Clips uploaded without sound, or converted from GIFs, have no audio file to fetch. So a silent result can mean either a failed mux or a video that never had sound — and the two are indistinguishable from the output alone. If a post's comments mention audio, the track exists.

Crossposts, mirrors, and where the media really lives

Reddit content travels. The same clip may appear as a native v.redd.it upload in one subreddit and as a link to Imgur, Streamable, YouTube, or Gfycat in another. A crosspost references the original post's media rather than holding its own copy, so if the original is removed the crosspost breaks. Many older links point at services that have since shut down entirely, which is why archived threads are full of dead media.

Removed, quarantined, and NSFW content

Moderator removal and admin removal behave differently: a moderator-removed post often keeps its media accessible while disappearing from listings, whereas admin removal generally takes the media down. Quarantined and age-gated subreddits require an authenticated session, so their content is not publicly resolvable.

Resolution is usually modest

Reddit caps and re-encodes uploads fairly aggressively; 720p is common and 1080p is the practical ceiling for most posts. Much of Reddit's video is itself re-uploaded from elsewhere, so you are frequently downloading a second- or third-generation copy. Expect compression artefacts that no download can undo — they are in the stored file.

Original content and the culture of credit

Reddit has a strong norm around OC tagging and sourcing. Clips of identifiable people are constantly re-posted without consent, and saving something does not make re-distributing it reasonable. Check whether a post is the creator's own before treating it as free to use.
