Reddit's looping content comes from genuinely different places: native uploads converted to silent MP4 on i.redd.it, true GIF files in older posts, links to external hosts like Imgur and Gfycat, and embedded clips from elsewhere. They look identical in the feed and behave completely differently underneath. Any tool that assumes one storage model will fail on the other three, which is why results vary so much post to post.
The dead-host problem
Reddit's history is littered with links to services that no longer exist. Gfycat, which hosted an enormous share of Reddit's looping content for years, shut down in 2023 and took its library with it. Imgur has removed large volumes of older and unattributed content. The posts survive with their titles and comment threads intact while the media is simply gone — this is the single biggest reason old Reddit threads are full of broken images, and no tool can recover what is no longer hosted anywhere.
Native loops are silent by design
Reddit encodes converted GIFs without an audio stream, so silence is expected. Separately and confusingly, Reddit's actual videos store audio in a different file from the video, so a silent result there means something else entirely — the audio track was never fetched and muxed in.
Quality reflects a long chain of re-posting
Much of Reddit's looping content has been re-posted across several platforms before arriving, re-encoded at each step. Blocky gradients and smeared motion were baked in generations ago.
Subreddit rules vary enormously
Some communities require sources on every post, others tolerate none. Age-gated and quarantined subreddits need an authenticated session and are not publicly resolvable.
