Pins point elsewhere more often than people expect

Pinterest is a bookmarking service before it is a hosting service. A large share of Pins are references to media that lives on someone else's website, with Pinterest storing only a thumbnail. Idea Pins and video Pins are different: those are uploaded to Pinterest and hosted there. This split explains the most common frustration — one Pin downloads a full video, the next returns only an image — and it is a property of what the Pin is, not a failure of the download.

Idea Pins are multi-page

An Idea Pin is a sequence of pages, each of which can be a video clip, a still, or a text card, and each page is stored separately. There is no single combined file, so the result is a set of assets rather than one continuous video. The page transitions you see while tapping through are rendered by the app.

Vertical by design, and what that means for quality

Pinterest optimises hard for tall formats — 2:3 and 9:16 dominate, and the feed is built around them. Video Pins are typically served around 720p on the long edge. A horizontally shot video uploaded as a Pin gets letterboxed rather than cropped, so the black bars in the downloaded file were baked in at upload and are not something the download introduced.

Boards cannot be bulk-resolved

A board is a collection of independent Pins, each with its own URL and its own media. There is no endpoint that returns "everything on this board" as a package, so saving a board means working through its Pins one at a time. Secret boards are private to their owner and not reachable at all.

Image quality is better than the feed suggests

The images you scroll past are compressed thumbnails sized for the grid. The stored original behind a Pin is frequently much larger — often 1000 pixels or more on the long edge. For image Pins specifically, resolving the link rather than right-clicking the thumbnail is the difference between a usable file and a small preview.

Attribution is the whole point of Pinterest

Pins carry a source link precisely so credit travels with the image. Recipes, patterns, artwork, and photography on Pinterest belong to identifiable people whose livelihoods often depend on that attribution surviving. Saving for a private mood board is ordinary; stripping the source and re-posting is the behaviour Pinterest's entire link structure exists to prevent.
