Per-post privacy makes Facebook unusual

On most platforms an account is public or private and everything follows from that. Facebook sets an audience on each individual post: Public, Friends, Friends except, Specific friends, Only me, or a custom list. A Story is no different. This is the single most important thing to understand here, because it means reachability cannot be predicted from the account — the same person's Stories can be publicly served one day and entirely private the next.

Pages behave differently from profiles

Facebook Pages exist to be seen, and their Stories are usually public by default. Personal profiles default to Friends. In practice, almost every publicly resolvable Facebook Story comes from a Page, a business, or a public figure rather than from an individual's personal account.

Twenty-four hours, then the endpoint closes

Like Stories everywhere, Facebook's expire after a day and stop being served. Facebook does offer an archive feature, but that is private to the author and not publicly reachable.

Cross-posting from Instagram is common

Meta lets a single Story publish to both Instagram and Facebook simultaneously. When that happens, two separate copies exist, each processed independently by its platform. They are not the same file, and quality can differ — worth knowing if you have a choice of which to save.

Everything drawn on it is permanent

Stickers, polls, music attribution, text, GIFs, and location tags are composited into the image or video before storage. A poll in a saved Story shows its frozen final state; the interactive element is long dead but its rendered appearance is part of the file.

Public from a Page is the comfortable case

A Story published publicly by a business is marketing material intended to travel. A Story from a person's profile that happens to be public is a different proposition, and worth thinking about before it goes any further.
