Facebook Reels are not Instagram Reels
The name is shared and the format is similar, but they are separate products on separate infrastructure. A Facebook Reel lives under facebook.com or fb.watch, is often cross-posted from a Page rather than a personal profile, and can run longer than its Instagram counterpart. Links copied from the Facebook app frequently arrive as shortened fb.watch addresses that redirect to the real post — that redirect has to be followed before any media can be resolved, which is why a bare fb.watch link sometimes appears to fail on tools that do not chase it.
Privacy settings are per-post, not per-account
This is the biggest practical difference from Instagram. A Facebook account is not simply public or private; every individual post carries its own audience — Public, Friends, Friends except, Only me, or a custom list. A Reel from a public Page is reachable. The same person's next Reel, shared to Friends only, is not. So "their other video worked" is not evidence that this one should, and it is the most common source of confusion.
Pages, Groups, and why Groups usually fail
Content posted by a Page is generally public by default — Pages exist to be seen. Groups are the opposite: most are private or hidden, and media inside them sits behind membership. Even in a public Group, individual posts can be restricted. If a Reel lives in a Group, expect it not to resolve.
Multiple renditions, and the audio caveat
Facebook serves video adaptively like most large platforms, so several qualities usually exist and the highest is worth taking. Audio has a quirk: Facebook autoplays video muted in-feed, and some uploaders take advantage of that by publishing with burned-in captions and near-silent audio. A downloaded Reel that seems to have no meaningful sound may genuinely have been posted that way.
Cross-posted content and duplicate files
Creators routinely publish the same clip to Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, and TikTok. These are separate uploads, each re-encoded by the platform that received it. The Facebook copy is not the same file as the Instagram copy, and quality can differ noticeably between them. If a clip matters, it is worth checking which platform holds the better version.
Public does not mean unowned
A Reel from a public Page is usually marketing material the Page wants distributed — which makes saving it low-friction, and re-uploading it as your own content no more acceptable than anywhere else.
