Facebook generates several derivatives of every uploaded photo at different sizes and serves whichever fits the layout. What you scroll past is a compressed preview sized for speed. The largest stored derivative is typically 2048 pixels on the long edge, which is dramatically more image than the feed suggests — and it is the reason resolving a post beats right-clicking a thumbnail.
Facebook still recompresses on upload
Even the largest stored version is not the photographer's original. Facebook resizes and re-encodes at upload, and has historically been more aggressive about it than Instagram. A 6000-pixel camera file uploaded to Facebook is not retrievable at that size from Facebook, because it was never kept. Anyone offering "original quality" from a Facebook link is describing something the platform discarded years ago.
Albums are collections of independent objects
A Facebook album groups photos for display, but each photo is its own object with its own URL, its own audience setting, and its own metadata. There is no address that returns an album as a package. This also means a single album can legitimately contain photos with different privacy settings, so part of an album may resolve while the rest does not.
Tagged photos live on the tagger's post
A photo you appear in belongs to the post of whoever uploaded it, governed by their audience setting rather than yours. Being tagged grants visibility, not control, which surprises people regularly.
Metadata is stripped
Facebook removes most EXIF data at upload — camera model, settings, GPS coordinates and capture time are generally gone. Good for the person who posted it; occasionally frustrating if you were trying to establish when something was taken.
Personal photos are personal
Pages post marketing images meant to circulate. Individuals post pictures of their families. The download mechanism does not distinguish between them, and it is worth doing so yourself.
