Why the file is small, and why no tool can change that
Instagram resizes avatars at upload and keeps only the resized copy. The largest publicly served variant is typically 320 pixels square, with smaller derivatives at 150 and 44 for different interface positions. If a creator uploaded a 3000-pixel portrait, that original is not retained on the public endpoint — it was discarded after processing. Any service advertising "HD profile pictures" is either upscaling with software, which invents pixels rather than recovering them, or describing something that does not exist.
Cropping is destructive and happens once
Instagram crops avatars to a square at upload, then displays that square inside a circular mask. The circle is a display effect and the stored file is square, so a download returns the full square including the corners hidden by the mask. What it cannot return is anything outside the square crop — that part of the original image was removed permanently when the creator positioned it.
Changing an avatar does not create a history
Each new profile picture replaces the last at the same object.
