The audio is already a separate stream
An MP4 is a container holding a video track and an audio track side by side, encoded independently. Extraction does not transcribe or re-record anything — it lifts the existing audio stream out and writes it to its own file. Instagram encodes that stream as AAC, so writing it to M4A can copy the data through untouched, while writing it to MP3 decodes and re-encodes it. Both are usable; the MP3 is marginally lossier and universally playable.
Original sounds and catalogue music are stored the same way
Instagram distinguishes a creator's own audio from a licensed track in its music library, and surfaces that difference in the interface with an attribution line. Technically, though, both are mixed into the rendered video before storage. Extraction cannot separate a creator's voiceover from the backing track underneath it, because by the time the file exists they are one stream. If a Reel has music under speech, the extraction has music under speech.
Why some Reels come back silent
Licensing for Instagram's music catalogue is negotiated per territory, and when an agreement does not cover your region the platform mutes the track rather than blocking the post. The endpoint then serves a video whose audio is genuinely silent, and the extraction reflects that faithfully. Speech survives, music suffers
Instagram delivers audio at roughly 128 kbps. That is generous for the human voice, which occupies a narrow frequency band and compresses cleanly, and tight for music, where cymbals, strings, and reverb tails reveal artefacts first. This is why extracting a recipe narration or a language lesson sounds fine while extracting a song sounds thin — the bitrate is the same, the material is not.
Nothing arrives tagged
A video file carries no ID3 metadata, so extracted audio has no title, artist, or artwork. A folder of extractions shows up in any music player as a stack of untitled tracks in upload order. If you are keeping them, tag them straight away; identifying them a month later from waveform alone is miserable.
Where the line sits
Saving a creator's original sound for personal listening is ordinary. Re-uploading it as your own audio, or building monetised content over a commercial track you extracted, is not — Instagram's licence covers playback inside Instagram and does not travel with the file.
